Assassin’s Creed Hexe Has a Huge Pool of ‘Witch’ Games to Draw From

Highlights

  • Assassin’s Creed Hexe is set in the era of the mass witch trials in the Holy Roman Empire, providing a uniquely dark and tragic setting for the game.
  • Hexe could draw inspiration from other franchises like Resident Evil: Village and Hogwarts Legacy to create a compelling and immersive story about witches and witchcraft.
  • The Witcher series, with its diverse portrayal of witches and atmospheric exploration, could provide inspiration for Hexe’s characters, world-building, and gameplay.

Assassin’s Creed Hexe is seemingly taking the Assassin’s Creed franchise into very different territory. The initial teaser trailer for the game portrayed a darker tone than any game that has come before it, fully channeling the tumultuous setting in which it is placed. This new Assassin’s Creed is purportedly set in the era of the mass witch trials in the Holy Roman Empire, the region of Central Europe where present-day Germany currently resides. During this time, tens of thousands of people labeled as witches were executed amid a religious war that engulfed the region.

With such a uniquely dark and tragic setting compared to other games in the series, it seems fitting that this new AC looks to other franchises for inspiration. Particularly when it comes to the presentation of witches and witchcraft. As magic is real in Assassin’s Creed games at times, explained by either Isu technology or animus trickery, there could very well be some actual dark arts featured in Hexe. There are plenty of witch games out there that Assassin’s Creed Hexe can draw inspiration from, and it will be interesting to see if and what Ubisoft takes from them.

It’s Important Assassin’s Creed Hexe Represents Witches Accurately

Assassin’s Creed Hexe seemingly focuses on the complicated European witch trials, a setting that demands well-written characters and plot.

Resident Evil: Village

Though not exclusively about witches, Resident Evil: Village has a sort of folk horror vibe that could serve as inspiration for Hexe. Given the setting of Hexe, it has the opportunity to channel the tone of other genres, even horror. Hexe is also seemingly set sometime during the 1500s–1600s when medieval villages were still very much a part of the European landscape. It’s possible that Hexe could channel some of the look and atmosphere of Village while telling its own unique story.

Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil Village, or Resident Evil 8, is the direct sequel to RE7 and continues its story. The game became hugely popular upon release, with one of its characters, Lady Dimitrescu, becoming a meme. RE Village won Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards in 2021.

Hogwarts Legacy

Offering a completely different take on witches and witchcraft is Hogwarts Legacy, Warner Bros. Games’ immersive adventure into the world of Harry Potter. Hogwarts Legacy is full of spells and magic like the novels and films before it, showing a more lighthearted but still treacherous world of witchcraft that Hexe could draw from. As Assassin’s Creed games of the past usually balance the dramatic plot with the occasional comedic character and quippy dialogue, Hogwarts Legacy could be a good source of inspiration.

Blacktail

Blacktail is an indie game that allows players to take control of the Baba Yaga, an ancient witch who was exiled from their village. Players must hunt down evil spirits using spells, archery, and other exciting combat as they uncover the mystery of the Baba Yaga. It is possible that the protagonist of Assassin’s Creed Hexe may be a practitioner of witchcraft, and might have a similar motive as the character in Blacktail. Blacktail also features a morality system that allows players to choose the path of good if they desire, which is something that could be interesting in Hexe.

The Witcher 3

The Witcher series features several different types of witches and crones, something that could play into Assassin’s Creed Hexe‘s story. There are witches that can use their powers for good and then there are those that only seek to harm. This idea paired with the overall atmosphere could help steer Hexe in the right direction. Elements like:

  • The Wilderness
  • In-depth side quests
  • Castles and medieval villages

The overall exploration in The Witcher 3 could be a good source of inspiration for Hexe as well. The Witcher series is known for providing ample activities to do and things to see in its massive open worlds, and if Hexe is a fully open world, it would do well to take notes.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3 is the third major installment in the Witcher series. In this game, players once again take up the mantle of Geralt, a monster hunter who roams the open world taking on contracts.
